epnn – “Solidarity with Lorca” is the name of an initiative to raise funds to help those affected by the double major earthquake that shook the town of Lorca in southern Spain, killing at least ten and leaving hundreds wounded. Spanish Diaconia initiated the project to enable quick help and relief for the affected region. A team of the Diaconia technical office will coordinate the work with the regional office in close contact to the local parishes and church facilities.

The magnitude-5.2 tremor toppled several buildings after striking at a depth of just 1km, 120km south-west of Alicante. Spanish TV captured images of a church bell tower crashing to the ground, BBC news reported. Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has deployed emergency military units to the scene, Spanish news agency Efe reported. The affected region of Murcia is the country’s most seismically active area and suffered tremors in 2005 and 1999.
